Lut Desert, the world’s 27th-largest desert was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016.
Lut Desert which is located in three provinces of South Khorasan, Kerman, and Sistan & Baluchestan, has occupied 10% of Iran’s area.
The unique features that Lut Desert deserve to be inscribed on this list are:
- The highest and longest Kalut (Yardang) in the world.
- The temperature of 70.7 has been recorded within the property.
- The highest sand dunes in Rige Yalaan (480 meters).
- The highest Nebkha in the world.
Lut experienced its hottest temperature during 2004-2009 and is also known as the hottest spot of the earth. It is interesting to know that because of its dark sand color in this latitude it absorbs more heat.
Remnants of 6000 years old civilization have been discovered in the foothills of around Lut Desert’s mountains. Also, the most important residences around Lut are Shahdad and Sirch villages with early man life history.
